A Letter, With Love

Dear Woman trying to make an example out of me to her daughter,

While I understand that you caught me at a "low" point in my retail career, (doing the store a favor by taking out some trash), and how that might have given you the assumption that I am of low stature, it does not however make me deaf. Therefore as a piece of advice next time you feel the need to exclaim to your teenage daughter "That's what happens when don't go to college," you might want to try using your indoor voice. I would also suggest switching from an obvious pointing gesture to something a bit more subtle, like a head nod.

I'd next like to point out the fact that while you obviously think I am ill educated, you yourself don't seem like the sharpest tool in the shed. Along with your tact, it seems quite clear that you have forgotten that little jingle they teach you in high school. "when you assume you make an ass out of you and me." Although in this occasion you really just made an ass out of yourself. Despite your need to publicly point out my apparent lack of intelligence, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt, figuring that in order for you to make such a harsh judgement, that you must have some sort of college degree yourself. While I would very much like to know from what University and in what major, I'll leave that conversation for another time.

I think you'll be more than shocked to know that I too am an educated woman, and I am willing to bet that I'm even more educated than you. Now that's not an assumption, that's an actual hypothesis I created on a little bit of research I did. By analyzing the rude way you think it's okay to talk down to people, and your tawdry way of doing it, combined with what appears to be your feeling that your status is so beyond mine you can't even address me like a fellow human being, I can reasonably conclude that you are a fucking idiot.

My concerns over your comment are as follows: First and foremost I am absolutely appalled that you think I look old enough to have completely thrown my life away. What should I be doing (at TWENTY FOUR) that would be considered a more respectable lifestyle? Curiously what career path did you chose that allows you to wander low end retail parking lots in the middle of the day? Judging by your salon-ed hair, designer clothes, stuck up attitude, and giant rock glimmering off your left finger, you really put that "college degree" to use. Secondly where the hell were you raised that gives you the audacity to make comments like that out loud? I'm pretty sure they have a word for women who marry for money, can't shut their mouth, and have a complete lack of class....

It's clear that you have a colorful assortment of character flaws that need to be worked out, starting first and foremost with your delusional idea that we're functioning on some sort of Valley Caste System and you're the one sitting at the top. Retail is not in any way synonymous with uneducated. Though it hardly requires the credentials and qualifications needed for "Gold Digging Housewife," we still manage to go to college and *gasp* even pursue higher degrees. So next time you see me toting trash out the back door, take my advice, lean over to your daughter and repeat after me, "That's what happens when you're being a decent human being." That will at least give us a small fleck of hope that she won't turn into the same steel hearted bitch bimbo that you turned out to be.

Love,
just some illiterate girl.

pet PEEVED

When did it become okay for people to have conversations on cell phones in quiet public places? i.e. the waiting room of a doctor's office?

I know I have talked about this issue before, but this is honestly one of my biggest pet peeves, and it seems as if the problem is just getting worse. As much as I embrace technology and am absolutely addicted to my *crack*berry, I cannot stand the lack of etiquette people seem to have when it comes to using their cell phones.

From my own personal experience the past few days, it seems that loudly rehashing the events of last evening, to a mystery person on the other line, especially in generally quiet areas such as waiting rooms and elevators, is now an acceptable practice. I guess I missed the memo. This entire time I have been politely leaving these quiet areas to answer my phone in a hushed voice, only to inform the caller that I will call them back when in a more acceptable atmosphere. I had no idea I could have just been enjoying the conversation without exerting any effort to move at all. Think of  all of those wasted extra steps! For a person of my laziness, that really hits me where it hurts.

Call me old fashioned, but I think conversations about how your bowel movements, or lack there of, should be discussed in a more private manner. But what I especially dislike is the fact that you have chosen to have that conversation in a venue in which the surrounding people cannot escape. Believe it or not, I'm not sitting in that Doctor's office reception area at my own leisure, looking for a good time. I'm most likely stuck there. Waiting for an appointment that's an hour behind schedule. Getting up and leaving is not really a feasible option, and therefore I am being forced to listen to the drama you're having with your best friend, and what a dirty whore this supposed best friend is. It may seem shocking, but I don't care. And if I don't really care about something, I most certainly do not want to listen to only half of it. I have no idea what the person on the other line thinks, but judging by your blatant stupidity and rudeness, it's their opinion I'd probably rather hear. If you're gonna be so disruptive to us all, the least you can do is put it on speaker, so we can hear the entire story!

So next time you're sitting in a classroom before it starts, or a movie theater 20 minutes before the show, or riding in an awkward elevator, or sitting in your dentist's waiting area; go ahead and take this advice: Stick to Texting! There is no need to alert the people around you to your idiocy. We can probably already tell from the blank expression on your face. While most offenders in this area are the young teens and adults of this world (it's apparent that our generation has a large dilemma in the manners department), the older generations should not rule themselves out completely. In fact that last three times this has happened, it has been people in their 40's+ causing the problems. While I have great respect for those older and wiser than me, just because you're a "grown up" does not mean the rules don't apply.

Tips from the Wise

i recently acquired a second job working in retail. it's been about three years since i have done anything for work other than teaching swim lessons, so it was definitely a surprise to see how rude society has gotten. i don't go into your place of work, walk up to your desk and push everything off, so you should respect mine too. so in order to prevent the further loss of general manners, i have kindly compiled a list of shopping tips for you to consider on your next retail outing.

(and of course, when i say "consider" i mean "strictly follow!")

1. If you ask for something rudely, it's pretty much a guarantee that we "won't have your size" in the back room. Unless of course we work on commission, but if you had to approach us, we probably aren't getting a commission. therefore you can take your rude attitude to another store that gets paid to kiss your ass.

2. If the shirt is ugly when it's folded, it's still going to be ugly when unfolded. So don't waste your time AND ours.

3. Just because it is on sale DOES NOT mean you have to touch it. Especially if you have no intention of buying it.

4. A pity fold is always greatly appreciated, even if it's wrong. At least we know you have compassion, unlike the other heartless devils who terrorize the store.

5. Bargain shopping is great! Even better when it is an extra 50 percent off! I get it! You want to make sure you get to see everything, to make sure you're really taking advantage of the deal. However, this does not give you the right to push the sales associate out of the way. Or throw things at her.

6. If your size is at the bottom of the neatly folded stack, it's not necessary to pick up the top of the stack and violently dump it out of the way. Just violently enough that each shirt has to be refolded. Thanks.

7. Picking up fifteen items from everywhere in the store and then all the sudden deciding you don't want it and just dumping it on the first employee you see is not very nice. I get what you're thinking, but just hang it on a rack somewhere, we'll get to it eventually. Or here is a crazy idea: you could attempt to put some of it back yourself.

8. If you took it off the hanger...put it back on...right side out.

9. Remember how you're mom always told you to pick your clothes up off the floor? Well just because this isn't your room, doesn't mean that its okay to throw things on the floor.

10. T shirt sizes don't vary with color.Meaning: you do not need to unfold the medium in EVERY color. It's the SAME fucking shirt.

11. Bathing suit season is WAY over by August. Gotta clear it out! Christmas shirts are coming soon! DUH. And fyi: it's not my fault you're an idiot.

In conclusion be nice when you are shopping. Angry and rude is going to get you no where fast. And have some common courtesy...be respectful to the fact that whatever you mess up, someone probably just spent an hour folding it to make it perfect.

P.S today at work a woman asked me where our purses were, and i replied with "well what kind of purse are you looking for? like a purse purse or another kind of purse?"
REALLY LAUREN?!!??
